Best Greek Islands 2027 — Which Island Is Right for You?

By Discovery Escapes · Updated October 2026 · 10 min read

Greece has over 200 inhabited islands. Choosing between them is the single most common planning question our Greece clients ask. The answer depends entirely on what you want — there's no "best" Greek island, only the best Greek island for you.

This guide breaks it down by travel style so you can make the right choice.

Quick Summary

For romance and sunsets: Santorini. For beaches: Naxos, Milos, or Crete. For nightlife: Mykonos or Ios. For authenticity: Naxos, Sifnos, or Hydra. For families: Crete or Corfu. For sailing: the Cyclades circuit.

By Travel Style

For Romance & Honeymoons — Santorini

Nothing in the Mediterranean competes with Santorini for sheer romantic impact. The caldera view from a clifftop suite, the sunset over the Aegean, the Assyrtiko wine at a table for two — it's a cliché because it's genuine. Stay in Oia or Imerovigli for the full experience. Visit in May or September to avoid sharing it with 10,000 other couples.

For Beaches — Milos or Naxos

If beaches are the priority, skip Santorini (volcanic, black, gets boiling hot) and go to Milos or Naxos. Milos has the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Cyclades — Sarakiniko's white lunar landscape, Tsigrado's sea cave, Firiplaka's turquoise water. Naxos has the longest sandy beaches in the Cyclades (Agios Prokopios, Plaka) and is better for families with young children.

For Nightlife — Mykonos

Mykonos is Europe's most famous party island — and it earns the reputation. Super Paradise beach by day, Little Venice at sunset, Nammos and Scorpios for those with serious budgets. It's also expensive, crowded in summer, and very gay-friendly. If you want atmosphere without the full party scene, go in June or early September.

For History & Culture — Crete or Rhodes

Crete is Greece's largest island and has extraordinary depth — the Minoan Palace of Knossos, the Samaria Gorge (Europe's longest), Venetian harbours in Chania and Rethymno, and one of Greece's best food scenes. Rhodes has the best-preserved medieval Old Town in Europe (UNESCO), with its Palace of the Grand Masters and Street of the Knights intact after 700 years.

For Authenticity — Hydra or Sifnos

Hydra has no cars, no scooters, no motor vehicles of any kind — just donkeys, boats, and foot traffic on cobbled lanes. It's a 90-minute hydrofoil from Athens and feels genuinely removed from modern life. Artists and writers have lived here for decades. Sifnos is a quieter Cycladic island famous throughout Greece for its food — it's reportedly produced more master chefs per capita than any other Greek island.

For Families — Crete or Corfu

Crete's west coast (Chania, Rethymno) has long sandy beaches, excellent tavernas, and a size that means it never feels overwhelmed. Corfu is lusher and greener than the Cyclades — Venetian architecture in Corfu Town (UNESCO), long beaches on the north coast, and a more relaxed pace than the peak-season Cyclades.

For Island-Hopping — The Cyclades Circuit

The best island-hopping route connects: Athens → Santorini → Naxos → Paros → Mykonos, or the longer version adding Milos and Sifnos. Ferries run frequently May–October; the Seajets catamaran network is fast and reliable. We design complete island-hopping routes with all ferry bookings as part of our custom Greece tours.

How Many Islands Should You Visit?

  • 7 days: 1 island properly, or Athens + 1 island
  • 10 days: Athens + 2 islands comfortably
  • 14 days: Athens + 3–4 islands, or a full Cyclades sailing circuit
Don't over-island

The most common Greek islands mistake is trying to visit too many in too little time. Two nights on an island gives you one full day — barely enough to find your favourite restaurant. Three or four nights per island is the sweet spot. Quality over quantity.

Plan Your Greek Islands Trip

Our custom Greece tours cover all the islands above — from Athens-and-two-islands packages to full Cyclades sailing circuits. We book all ferry connections, handle the routing, and select hotels that match your travel style on each island. Tell us which islands appeal and we'll design the perfect island-hopping itinerary within 48 hours.
