Best Time to Visit Greece in 2027

By Discovery Escapes · Updated October 2026 · 9 min read

Greece is one of Europe's most popular destinations — and one where timing matters enormously. Santorini in August is a gridlocked, tourist-choked island with €30 cocktails and sunset-viewpoint queues starting at 4pm. Santorini in May or October is a completely different place. Knowing when to go separates a good Greece trip from an exceptional one.

Quick Answer

May, June, and September are the best months to visit Greece overall. You get sunshine, warm sea temperatures, and manageable crowds. July and August are peak season — very hot, very crowded, and significantly more expensive. Athens is excellent October–April for cultural visits.

Best Time by Island & Region

🌅 Santorini

Best: May–June, September–October. August Santorini is the most overcrowded island in the Mediterranean. The caldera-view restaurants are booked out weeks ahead; the sunset viewpoint in Oia is a wall of humanity. May and September are identical in weather with a fraction of the crowds. October is genuinely magical — mild, quiet, cheap.

🎉 Mykonos

Best: June, September. Mykonos peaks hard in July–August — the most expensive nightlife in Greece, packed beaches, and €500+ rooms. June is excellent: warm enough to swim, clubs open, hotels at saner prices. September is the best month — beach weather, sea warmth, and the party crowd thinning out.

🏛️ Athens

Best: April–May, October–November. Athens in summer is genuinely hot and gritty. But the Acropolis and National Archaeological Museum are outstanding year-round. Spring and autumn bring perfect sightseeing temperatures. Easter in Athens is extraordinary — candlelit processions, lamb on the spit, celebrations that go all night.

🌊 Crete

Best: May–June, September–October. Greece's largest island has a long season — warm from May to late October. Crete's west (Chania, Rethymno) is less crowded than the east. Samaria Gorge hike is open May–October. The island retains more authenticity than the Cyclades even in high season.

⛵ Greek Islands Sailing

Best: May–June, September. Our sailing tours of the Cyclades and Ionian islands are best in these months — consistent winds (the meltemi blows strongest July–August, which can be challenging for sailing), warm seas, and uncrowded anchorages. Our Greek Islands Sailing tour runs from Athens through the Cyclades.

🏺 Rhodes, Kos & Dodecanese

Best: May–June, September–October. The Dodecanese islands have a longer season than the Cyclades and slightly fewer crowds at peak. Rhodes Old Town (a UNESCO medieval city) is genuinely impressive year-round. Kos is more package-holiday focused. Patmos and Symi are the islands for travellers who want authenticity.

The Best Months for Greece

May — Perfect

The sea is warm enough to swim (19–21°C), wildflowers are blooming across the islands, the light is extraordinary (Greece's quality of light is famous among photographers), and prices are 25–40% below August. Most island businesses are open but not overwhelmed. This is consistently the month our travel specialists recommend most for the Greek islands.

September — The Connoisseur's Month

August's crowds evaporate after the 15th. The sea reaches its annual warmest (25–26°C). Tavernas are still fully open. Sunsets are earlier and more dramatic. Hotels drop their rates. This is the month that frequent Greece visitors return to every year.

Greek Easter (April) — Unmissable if Timing Works

Greek Easter (which follows the Orthodox calendar and falls differently from Western Easter) is one of the great cultural experiences in Europe. The midnight Resurrection service, the candlelit procession, the lamb feast on Easter Sunday — experiencing this on one of the traditional islands (Hydra, Patmos, Spetses) is genuinely unforgettable. Accommodation books out early, especially on the smaller islands.

The August Reality

August is the single busiest month for domestic Greek tourism — half of Athens migrates to the islands. Santorini has more visitors than it can handle. Ferries are packed and late. Restaurants are overbooked. If you visit in August, choose Crete's west coast, the Ionian islands (Corfu, Lefkada, Kefalonia), or one of the less-visited Aegean islands (Naxos, Paros, Sifnos) over Santorini or Mykonos.
