When To Travel To Spain
Spain Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit Spain in 2026 & 2027
Spain is one of Europe's most climatically varied countries — the north (Basque Country, Galicia) is green and rainy; the centre (Madrid, Castilla) roasts in summer and freezes in winter; the south (Andalusia) is hot almost year-round; and the islands (Balearics, Canaries) offer near-guaranteed sunshine in different seasons. Knowing which part of Spain you're visiting changes everything about when to go.
For most of Spain, April–June and September–October are the sweet spots — warm enough for beaches and comfortable for cities, without the July–August crowds and heat. Ibiza peaks in summer. The Canary Islands are warmest in winter. Barcelona and Madrid are great year-round.

Best Time by Region
🏙️ Barcelona
Best: May–June, September–October. Barcelona's Mediterranean climate means it's pleasant almost year-round. The city is stunning in spring and early autumn — perfect sightseeing weather, beaches warming up, and hotel prices below peak. July–August brings packed beaches and soaring hotel rates.
👑 Madrid
Best: April–June, September–October. Madrid's interior climate is extreme — blistering summers (35°C+) and cold winters (5°C). The shoulder seasons are ideal: warm days, busy cultural calendar, and no suffocating heat. Avoid Madrid in August when much of the city shuts down for holiday.
💃 Seville & Andalusia
Best: March–May, October. Seville in July and August is the hottest city in Western Europe — regularly 40°C+. Visiting in April (around Semana Santa and Feria) or October gives you the architecture, flamenco, and tapas without heatstroke. Spring is genuinely spectacular.
🏖️ Ibiza & Balearics
Best: May–June, September. Ibiza's clubs and beach clubs run June–September, peaking in July–August. For a calmer, more affordable Ibiza — coastal coves, local markets, hilltop villages — May and September are perfect. Mallorca and Menorca are excellent in May and October.
🌊 Costa Brava & Costa del Sol
Best: May–June, September. Both coasts are beach-beautiful in summer but packed to capacity in July–August. May and September deliver the same sunshine (24–27°C sea temperature in September on the Costa del Sol) with far fewer people and much lower hotel prices.
🌴 Canary Islands
Best: November–April (winter sun). The Canaries are Spain's year-round warm destination. Winter is their peak season — 20–24°C while mainland Europe freezes. Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura are all excellent choices for a winter escape.
Key Spanish Events Worth Timing Around
- Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April) — Seville's Easter processions are among the world's most extraordinary. Book accommodation a year in advance. Every Spanish city celebrates, but Seville and Málaga are the most spectacular.
- Feria de Abril (April, Seville) — Two weeks after Semana Santa, Seville holds its spring fair — flamenco dresses, horses, casetas, fino sherry. One of Spain's great experiences.
- Las Fallas (March, Valencia) — Giant paper-maché sculptures burned on the night of 19 March. Deafening, colourful, unmissable.
- San Fermín / Running of the Bulls (July, Pamplona) — Eight days of early-morning bull runs and all-night street parties.
- La Tomatina (August, Buñol) — The world's largest tomato fight, held on the last Wednesday of August near Valencia.
- Barcelona's La Mercè Festival (September) — Four days of free concerts, human tower competitions, and fire-running through the old city.
If you must travel in July–August, choose the north (Basque Country, Galicia, Cantabria) — cooler, green, and significantly less crowded than the south and the Balearics. San Sebastián in summer is one of the great food and beach experiences in Europe without the southern heat.
